David was born on November 16, 1943, in Burlington, Iowa, to Francis and Margaret (McKassen) Rutherford. The youngest of 13, he graduated from Burlington High School in 1962 before earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa. David dedicated his career to the Iowa Department of Transportation, where he played a vital role on the road design team until his retirement.
David found joy in nature, especially watching bluebirds, planting flowers, and embracing the outdoors. An avid square dancer, he and his wife, Marilyn, shared many fond memories on the dance floor.
A man of deep faith, David was a longtime member of West Des Moines Christian Church, where he found strength and community. Above all, he cherished his role as a grandfather, treasuring every moment spent with his grandchildren. He was also a proud member of the Society of Land Surveyors of Iowa.
