

Gary Lee Hayward, 74, of Ankeny, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, December 15, 2025.Born on June 27, 1951, to Donald and Beatrice Hayward, Gary lived a rich and fulfilling life marked by deep passions, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering love for his family.
A die-hard Iowa Hawkeye fan, Gary's Saturdays were sacred, whether cheering from the stands at Kinnick Stadium or enjoying the games from the comfort of home. His enthusiasm for the Hawkeyes was infectious and a cherished part of his spirit.
Gary was deeply passionate about the arts, finding joy in both music and visual art. He had a profound appreciation for history and literature, with a keen eye for the value of first-edition books by authors he admired. His home was filled with treasures that reflected these loves.
Professionally, Gary possessed an unparalleled legal knowledge and a complete mastery of the law and the legal system. He delighted in sharing stories from his days in the courtroom,
captivating listeners with his insights and experiences.
Above all, Gary loved his family dearly. He was soft and kind-hearted, especially cherishing the moments watching his young nieces and nephews play and grow. It was hard to believe that this
devoted family man had become a great-great-uncle, a role that brought him immense pride and joy.
Gary will be cremated. A celebration of life will be held in the spring, at which time he will be laid to rest at McLaren’s Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, surrounded by his loving family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests considering donations to a cause close to Gary's heart, such as the Des Moines Arts Center, Des Moines Historical Society, or the University of Iowa Athletics Department.
Gary's legacy of kindness, intellect, and passion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
