Genevieve Poole, 81, a longtime resident of West Des Moines and Ames, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013.
Genevieve was born February 7, 1932 in Humeston, Iowa to Edward and Ada Poole. She was the seventh of ten children, one sister and eight brothers. She graduated from Humeston High School in 1950, married and had two daughters, Dana and Lisa. She received God’s blessing through baptism at age 12 in the Baptist Church in Humeston.
She attended First Evangelical Church in Ames for many years. She worked as a civil employee in Alaska for both Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson Army Base, and in Des Moines as a teacher associate, entrepreneur, ballroom dance instructor, and a great and loving mother. She retired from Broadlawns Hospital where she was an admitting clerk.
Genevieve was an avid reader, enjoyed raising house plants, gathering and writing the family genealogy, spending time with her family and friends, helping others and working for the Lord.
She is survived by her two daughters, Dana McCarthy of Des Moines and Lisa (Mark) Allen of Johnston; two grandchildren, Jocelyn (Jarad) Pedersen of Omaha and John Greenlee of Des Moines; three great-grandchildren, Ada and Evelyn Pedersen and Griffyn Greenlee. As well as two brothers, Louie (Patty) Poole and Willis (Debbie) Poole; two more sisters-in-law, Alfretta (James) Stephenson and Sarah (Earl) Poole and three generations of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Waunita and brothers, James, Earl, Dick, Russell, Bill and Daryl.
A Memorial service will be held Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 2 p.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 1001 S. James Street, Grimes, IA 50111. Memorial contributions may be directed to New Directions Women’s Shelter, 3001 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312.
