James Frederick “Fred” Thompson, 54, left us peacefully on Tuesday, January 2, 2018. Visitation will be from 12 Noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday with Military honors and a prayer at 1:30 p.m. at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery.
Fred was born February 5, 1963, in Windsor Heights to Charles and Margaret Thompson. He attended St. Theresa’s Catholic School and Church, graduating from Dowling Catholic High School in 1981. Fred was a Windsor Heights and West Des Moines Volunteer Firefighter for 17 years and served in the Iowa Army National Guard for 9 years. He was very patriotic and prayed every day for his family and military service men and women around the world. Fred was very proud of his family and bragged about them every chance he got. He enjoyed fishing, horseshoes, camping, traveling, cheering for his Steelers and Fighting Irish; and wearing his many logo t-shirts and caps.
Fred is survived by his wife of 30 years, Patty; children, Mandy Schwenneker (Dave Paloma) and Donnie (Kim) Schwenneker; three grandchildren, Michael, Madison, and Mason; brother-in-law, Chuckie Stanton; and his camping family at Cutty’s Camping Resort. He was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, Patricia and Charles Stanton; and grandson, Rylie G.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for future designation.
