Michael Kron, 48, died peacefully surrounded by his family on March 26, 2024, after sustaining a heart attack on March 5, 2024. Anyone who knows Michael knows he is a fighter and he did just that giving his family 21 days to support and love him until reaching his heavenly home.
Michael was born on September 16, 1975, to Ronald and Linda Kron. He adored his big brother Shane and was soon joined by his younger sister Rachael and younger brother, Justin. Michael was part of a close-knit faith-filled family. He had a competitive spirit from the get-go. It’s been said that no one hates losing more than Mike. He started playing sports with his brother at a very young age where he learned the lifelong skills of grit and determination. He went on to Iowa City Regina High School where he was a four-sport athlete all years of high school and became a member of the Regina Hall of Fame. Michael graduated and attended the University of Iowa where he walked on as a baseball player and eventually transferred to the University of Northern Iowa to play baseball as well.
While at the University of Northern Iowa, Michael met his wife, Krystal. They shared many friends and developed a friendship that blossomed into romance. After graduation, Michael moved to Des Moines and became a police officer with the Ankeny Police Department. He and Krystal were married on June 29, 2002, a day full of faith, joy, and laughter. Two years later, Michael and Krystal welcomed their daughter, Mallory Joy, and Michael decided to leave the police department and join Principal Financial Group where he has worked in compliance and investigations until the present time. The family grew again in 2007 with Brant Michael, and again in 2011 with the birth of Evan Joseph.
Michael found no greater joy than being a dad. He loved and supported his kids with all of his heart and soul. One of his greatest joys was sharing his love of baseball by being the coach of the Iowa Metro Knights for Brant and later the Waukee Swarm for Evan. Through coaching, he not only found a way to bond with his sons but to spread his most treasured values to the boys on his teams. He insisted that every family be the right fit creating opportunities to develop lifelong friends. He also faithfully attended the boys’ hockey games, and Mallory’s dance recitals, and cheered loudly at her cross-country events.
In his spare time, Michael loved golfing, hunting, and watching sports which included cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Detroit Tigers, and Miami Dolphins. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, and friend. He quietly spread the virtues of faith, integrity, perspective, determination, morality, selflessness and humility to anyone who knew him. Michael was a salt of the earth human and his presence in this time and space will be greatly missed.
Michael is survived by his wife, Krystal and their three children, Mallory (19), Brant (17) and Evan (12); his maternal grandmother, Joyce Burkett; parents; Ronald and Linda; his siblings, Shane (Marti) Kron, Rachael (Chris) Pisarik, and Justin (Catherine) Kron; and 11 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Richard and Bernice Kron; maternal grandfather, Aubrey Burkett; and uncles, James and Mike Burkett.
A visitation in Michael’s honor will be held at McLaren’s Funeral Home on Monday, April 1st from 4:30pm to 7:30 pm (rosary service at 3:45pm). His celebration of life will be held on April 2nd at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 10:00am with a light luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to his children’s college fund at ugift529.com using the code: D53-X4D (this will be for all 3, even though it says Mallory). In addition, please consider sharing your favorite Michael stories by emailing them to [email protected]. They will be compiled into a book for his kids to treasure for years to come.
