Milbert “Mel” Grummert, 84, died on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA. Mel was born on November 26, 1928 in Plymouth, NE. After graduating from the University of Nebraska with a degree in broadcasting, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served in Japan during the Korean conflict.
Following his service, Mel worked in radio and television news. In 1968, he moved to Des Moines, IA where he worked for Iowa Taxpayers Association and MidAmerican Energy. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Mel is survived by his wife of 53 years, Norma (Enabnit); daughters, Jayne (Scott) Nelson and Karen (Dennis) Bierbaum; and four grandchildren, Cody and Tyler Nelson and Karsyn and Trevor Bierbaum. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Augusta Grummert; sisters, Erna (Roy) Essman and Ida (Lee) Weichel; brother, Harlan; and granddaughter, Kenzie Bierbaum.
A private family service was held with interment at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, IA. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Des Moines, IA or Mercy Hospice, Johnston, IA.
