

Nadine graduated from Perry High School in Perry, Iowa, in 1957 and continued her education at the University of Iowa. She graduated from Drake University with a BS in Education in 1961 and began her first year of teaching in Des Moines. She earned an MS in 1968 and continued teaching second graders in West Des Moines. She retired from Iowa State University in 2002 after many years as a supervisor of student teachers.
Nadine was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Larry Killmer; her parents, Clarence and Freda Murphy; 3 brothers, infant Michael Murphy, C.M. “Butch” Murphy, and Terry Murphy; sister, Marilyn England; sister in-law, Karen Murphy; brother in-law, Jim Ekeland; and nephew, Stacy Murphy.
She is survived by her daughters, Megan Ferchen (Ron Rettig) and Janis (Bill) Holland, grandsons Kade and Alec Ferchen, sister Maureen Ekeland, sister-in-law Dianna Murphy, and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces.
A celebration of Nadine’s life will be held on the patio at Bix & Co, 111 5th St. West Des Moines from 4-6 on Friday, May 30, 2025. There was nothing Nadine enjoyed more than the sounds of people laughing and having fun. She always had an open door, fresh cookies, words of encouragement, and honest answers for everyone.
Nadine’s family wishes to thank the staff at Morningstar, especially those in the memory care unit, and St. Croix Hospice for the excellent care they provided. We are grateful for your love, support and compassion.
