Nora E. Pinnis, 104, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Fountain West Health Care Center in West Des Moines. A Memorial Service will be held at 11a.m. Friday, January 16, 2015 at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Burial of cremated remains will be in May 2015 at Latvian Memorial Park in Elka Park, New York.
Nora was born July 22, 1910 in Riga, Latvia to Janis and Karlina Kalnins. She lived in the Des Moines area for 44 years after retiring from hospital work. Nora was a member of the Latvian Society of Iowa and the Capitol Hill Lutheran Church in Des Moines. She was an avid outdoors woman and enjoyed spending her days gardening and shoveling snow. Nora loved ice skating as a youth and took great joy in her music including her accomplishments on the piano.
Nora will be missed by her daughter, Astrida (Edgars) Supstiks of Windsor Heights; son, Uldis (Elaine) Ilvess of Des Moines; step-daughters, Ilga (Mintauts) Caune of New Brunswick, NJ and Ligita (Helmuts) Lutsep of Hudson, WI; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius Pinnis; infant daughter, Margita Ilvess and brother, Hugo Kalnins.
A luncheon will be held at the Latvian Society of Iowa following the memorial service.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Capitol Hill Lutheran Church or the Latvian Society of Iowa.
