Oscar Deardorff, 52, passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous fight with cancer. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Living Faith, Lutheran Church with burial at St. John’s Cemetery in Cumming.
Oscar was born and raised in Cimarron, Kansas. He studied business at Kansas University and graduated from St. Mary’s of the Plains Catholic College in Dodge City, Kansas. Oscar spent his entire career in crop insurance working for Wheat Growers Mutual Hail Insurance and then transferred to Des Moines in 1995 to work for Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company. He was a member of Living Faith, Lutheran Church and Des Moines Golf and Country Club.
Oscar was the ultimate gentleman with style and class who had a passion in life for red wine, fine food, elaborate Christmas lights and fireworks.
Oscar is survived by his wife, Angie of Urbandale; daughter, Dianna Deardorff of Waukee; two sons, David Deardorff of Iowa City and Payne Hoyt of Urbandale; two sisters, Susie (Scott) Flood of Cumming and Jane (Rick) Crockett of Houston, Texas and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca and parents O.L. and Ruth Deardorff.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at McLaren’s Chapel. Memorial contributions may be given to the Margo Gerleman Scholarship Fund at Holy Trinity School or St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
