Richard James May, 65, was called home on Sunday, January 22, 2023 in Urbandale. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2023 at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at McLaren’s with burial at the Norwalk Cemetery.
Dick was born May 8, 1957 in Estherville, IA to James and Barbara (Robins) May. He graduated from Norwalk High School and went to work for Des Moines Water Works right after graduation. Dick worked there for 23 years from 1977 to 2000. He fought a long and hard battle from 2000 until his death. Dick loved hockey, playing cards, traveling as much as possible, and most of all he loved his grandchildren.
Dickis survived by his wife of 44 years, Deanna; two daughters, Amy (Bob) Gilliam and Carrie (Luc) DuBay; grandchildren, Daniel and Leslie Gilliam and Drew and Logan DuBay; and numerous friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara and father, James, who passed 36 hours before him. He and his father were able to share a room at the nursing home and the two where together in their final days.
