Shirley Anne (Hicks) Dalrymple Conner, a beloved matriarch, devoted teacher, and cherished friend to all who knew her, peacefully passed away at age 90 on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Karen Acres Health Care Center, surrounded by her loving family. Her infectious smile, warm heart, and generous spirit touched countless lives throughout her remarkable 90-year journey.
Born on October 26, 1934, in Valley Junction/West Des Moines, Iowa, to Lucille and Forrest Hicks, Shirley's deep roots in the community began early. A proud 1953 graduate of Valley High School, she maintained lifelong friendships with her classmates, who still gather monthly to share memories and laughter over lunch. Her passion for education led her to earn her Teaching Certificate from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls, and later her Bachelor of Arts degree at Drake University.
Shirley's dedication to nurturing others shone through in every aspect of her life. As a Homebound Teacher for the West Des Moines School District, she brought education and hope directly to students in need. Her leadership as Director at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church and her compassionate service as a Hostess at McLaren's Funeral Home demonstrated her unwavering commitment to supporting others during both celebrations and times of loss.
A pillar of her community, Shirley was an active member of the Clive Good Idea Club, West Des Moines Christian Church, West Des Moines Historical Society, Valley High School Alumni Association, and the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Her greatest joy came from being the ultimate "mom" - whether cheering at dance recitals, hockey games, swim meets or supporting Boy Scout activities. She found special delight in sharing coffee and conversation with family and neighbors, and expressing her creativity through sewing and crafting. Her warmth, love, and dedication to family and community will be forever remembered by the countless lives she touched, and her legacy of kindness will continue to inspire future generations.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Lucille and Forrest Hicks, her siblings: Don (Jo) Hicks, Wayne Hicks, Ray (Janelle) Hicks, Doris (Eldon) Ellis and Bill Hicks, her first husband John Dalrymple, her second husband Jim Conner, sons David Dalrymple and Tracy Conner, daughters in law Pamela Sue Conner and Dena Dalrymple, granddaughters Vicky and Ashlee Conner and several nieces and nephews.
Shirley is survived by her children: Doug Dalrymple, DeAnn Dalrymple, Denise (Henry) Mineart, Juanita (Marv) Veenendaal, Pam Conner, Andrea Dalrymple, Terry Conner, her first cousin Dee Townsend, her sister-in-law Sally Hicks, numerous nieces and nephews, 20 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and even some great-great-grandchildren,
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 9, 2025 at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery. Memorials can be given to Karen Acres Health Care Center or Suncrest Hospice Services.
