Tim (T.D.) Darrah, 66, was taken from us too soon but was doing what he loved most, going to watch his Iowa Hawkeyes play with some of his favorite people, including his daughter, Sami (Pal). He had a massive heart attack after the game on Saturday, November 18, 2017 and was gone almost instantly and didn’t suffer. He had just beaten cancer, got to be honored as the American Cancer Society Fan of the Year for his beloved Hawkeyes, and said more times than can be counted that he was so excited for this new chapter. “I’m feeling great and ready to go” he’d say. There will never be a page big enough or book long enough to fill with all of the wonderful and amazing things he did with his life, and for all of those blessed to know him. He was the best son, husband, father, and grandfather on earth. He never met a person he didn’t like and would give a stranger the shirt off of his back. Tim was the kindest, most thoughtful, caring person on earth and he has left a hole impossible to fill. He was one of the greats, tenderhearted, and the biggest sports fan to ever exist.
Tim was born on February 27, 1951 and although they moved around as he was growing up, he was a Fort Dodge Dodger for life, “Beat ‘em bust ‘em that’s our custom!” and he still carries those friends close to his heart. He met so many people on his journey, amazing people that became family to not only him but all of us. His loss will be felt in waves the world over.
He is survived by his amazing 91 year old mother, Barbara (Ma) Darrah; his strong courageous wife, Mona (Monie) Darrah; his three daughters, Katie (Katie Potatie Daddy’s Girl) Michalski, Sami (Sailor Sam) Bain, and Alexandra (Pinky) Darrah; his daughters’ husbands who he called his own, Troy Michalski and Luke Bain; his grandchildren, Keira Marie Michalski and Maddox Darrah Michalski; and his nephew who he considered his son, Mac (Willie) Darrah. Tim was preceded in death by his father, William Darrah, and his brother, Bill Darrah.
The family is honoring Tim’s wishes with a viewing on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 from 4 to 6 p.m. at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines, IA. The entire family may not be present. There will be a private family burial on Wednesday in the Van Meter Cemetery. “That’s where I raised my girls, met my sons-in-law, and had the best times of my life,” he said.
Dad wanted to honor his Irish Roots. “I don’t want a funeral when I go, I want a Wake, a big huge celebration with everyone I know and love. When I go I’m going out with a bang.” The family will send him out with a bang by throwing his Irish Wake and the biggest party ever, just like he wanted. The Wake will be held at Rube’s Steakhouse in Waukee, Iowa on Saturday November 25, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. and all are welcome. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be sent in Mona’s name to the funeral home or online at www.gofundme.com/tim-darrah-memorial-fund.
Loving Son, Husband, Father, & Grandfather (Poo), you will be missed. Until we meet again, Daddio. As Dad always said “God Bless Us Every One.” “TTFN.” “Hello.”
