Virginia DeGeus, 98, died peacefully on August 26, 2016 in West Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at McLaren’s Chapel. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in West Des Moines where she was a member her entire life. Burial will take place at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Virginia was born February 10, 1918 to Arthur Vernon and Zelpha Shoafstall in Valley Junction. She was a life-long resident of Valley Junction/West Des Moines and cherished her family, friends and her home on 12th Street. She enjoyed sitting and working in her yard while visiting with friends, neighbors and her pet squirrel, Fred, and continued to do so until the final weeks of her life.

Virginia is survived by her sons, Donnie Newquist (Rita) and Darrell DeGeus (Linda); sister, Betty Davis; grandchildren, Chuck Newquist, Eirik Newquist, Kirk Newquist, Laurie (DeGeus) Ambrose, Lisa (DeGeus) Amundson, David DeGeus and Lindsay (DeGeus) Louzon; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest in 1980; son, Gary (Pam Young); brothers, Vernon, Harold, Wayne and Robert (Rosalie); sister, Shirley Gould; and a special friend and niece, Susan (Gould) Lander.

Memorials are not requested, but may be directed to St. Mark Lutheran Church in her name.
