Arkaline “Arky” Silverio, 92, resident of Harwich Port, MA, formerly of New Britain and Bristol, CT, died peacefully at Wingate of Harwich on Tuesday, January 17, 2017.
Arky was born in New Britain, CT on February 1, 1924. He graduated from New Britain High School and studied engineering at UCONN. He was a proud US Navy veteran of World War II. After many years working for Emhart Corporation at their home office, he was transferred to manage the company’s Bologna, Italy plant, where he made many good friends, even becoming the godfather to one of his employee’s children. He later managed Emhart’s Hill Refrigeration plant in Barrie, Ontario, Canada.
Upon his retirement, and “not ready for the rocking chair,” he and wife, Janet, moved to the Cape to open and run The Inn on Bank Street for nine years. He also served as a retired executive volunteer for a manufacturing company in Brazil.
Arky ‘s distinctive laugh could be heard long before he was seen (and he loved to laugh). In retirement, he enjoyed playing bridge, and loved maintaining his yard and his vegetable garden.
He was a faithful communicant of Holy Trinity Church, in West Harwich, where he rarely missed mass.
In addition to his wife of 38 years, Janet, he is survived by his daughter, Joan Silverio and son, Jan Silverio (wife, Elaine); his stepdaughters Robin DePalma (husband, Jeff) and Joyce Shapiro (partner, David); grandchildren Chantel Silverio and Brianna Silverio (husband, Kamil); step grandchildren Jenny DePalma (partner, Gavin) and Liz DePalma; his sister Minnie, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his “best friend” Will. He was predeceased by his first wife, Jane, and eight of his ten siblings.
Arky’s family would like to thank the staff at Wingate of Harwich for their outstanding care and unfailing attention.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 23 from 4-6pm at Doane, Beal and Ames, 260 Main St, West Harwich, MA. There will be a 10am Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, January 24 at Holy Trinity Church, 246 Main St, West Harwich, MA. Burial with military honors will follow at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA.
