The daughter of Jean Grivelle (Yereance) Zapple and Nicholas Robert Zapple, Betsy was born in Washington, DC, raised in Falls Church, VA and spent her summers at the family home in Harwich Port, MA. She graduated from J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church, Virginia, in 1967, and attended Emerson College in Boston before moving to Bridgton, ME with her husband, Peter Lowell. After their divorce, Betsy moved to Cape Cod full-time, living there until her death.
Betsy’s career path took her in many directions, but she was proudest of her work as a paralegal in the Law Office of William Hammatt in Chatham, MA. She was a huge fan of live theater, and was involved both behind the scenes and as an actress at the Harwich Junior Theater and the Chatham Drama Guild. Her love for the Red Sox was legendary, and when she did venture off Cape Cod, it was usually to attend Red Sox regular season games at Fenway Park or spring training games in Ft. Myers, FL.
She is survived by her daughter, Adria Lowell Carr; Adria's husband, Fletcher; and her grandchildren, Lowell and Wells Carr. She is also survived by four siblings and their spouses: Rob Zapple and wife Michele, Peter Zapple and wife Robbie, David Zapple and wife Sandy Zak, and Barbara (Zapple) Walker and husband David Vaughan. She was pre-deceased by her father, Nick Zapple, in 2008; her sister Peggy Zapple in 2014; and her mother, Jean Zapple, in 2021.
Betsy spent the last few years as a resident at The Victorian, a sister facility to Liberty Commons in North Chatham. While there she made many wonderful friends among the other residents and staff and the family wishes to extend their thanks to all for the kindness they extended to her.
A private family memorial ceremony will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that any donations be made to The Harwich Junior Theater, 105 Division Street, West Harwich, MA 02671.
