

died peacefully at Harrington Hospital in Southbridge, MA on Friday
December 6th, with her daughters by her side. She had been recovering
from a partial hip replacement.
She was the wife of the late Irving P. “Mac” MacFarland; they were
married for 67 years.
Born in Boston, she was the youngest of seven children, the daughter
of Irish immigrants, and grew up in Jamaica Plain, MA. After finishing
school, she worked at an insurance company before moving with her
husband to Alabama for military service; then briefly to Weymouth, MA,
then Millis, MA where they raised a family, then retired to Harwich,
MA.
She was a member of the Holy Trinity parish in Harwich, belonged to
the Red Hat society, and was proud of her Cranberry Cup wins at
Cranberry Valley Golf Course. She loved playing cards and other games,
bowling, and golf. She and “Mac” also enjoyed traveling to Scotland,
Ireland, and other places with their children and grandchildren.
Her most treasured moments were those spent with her husband and
family. Her favorite name may have been “Nana”.
Mary is predeceased by her husband Irving, her son Jeffrey, her
daughter Susan, and her grandson Marc Small.
She is survived by her children – Peter and his wife Mary MacFarland
of Collegeville, PA, Janet and her husband Dennis Kane of Pepperell,
MA, Barbara and her husband Peter Mann of Pomfret Center, CT, Philip
and his wife Carol MacFarland of Ann Arbor, MI.
Her grand children: Greg Alberico and Cristin Checchia; Heather
Wellock, Jennifer Brooks, Matthew Small, and Megan MacFarland; Myles
and Peter Kane; Shannon Sleboda and Erica Kalkut; Seamus MacFarland.
Her great grand children: Ansley and Lawson Alberico, Suli and Braeden
Checchia, Emma, Hadley, and Finley Wellock, and Colin Kalkut.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, December 15th from 5-6:30pm at
Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 260 Main Street in West Harwich.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Monday, December 16th at Holy
Trinity Church, 246 Main Street in West Harwich, followed by a brief
burial service at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
