

His family moved to Jewett City, Connecticut when he was very young. On August 10, 1945, he joined the Marine Corps achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. He spent two years serving in China. On September 3, 1949, he married Faustina (Nina) McAvoy in Pawcatuck, CT who passed away earlier this year on August 20, 2014.
After leaving the Marine Corps in 1954, he and two of his brothers started Canterbury Metal Works. He later went on to work in the steel industry. He was a long time employee of the Shepard Steel Company and Elwell Iron Works. After retirement, Rene enjoyed being an assistant recreation director at Pleasant Bay Rehabilitation Center in Harwich.
Rene enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing and traveling. He often reminisced about his trips to Japan and South America. He spent time on the planning board in Dennisport, Massachusetts where the Cotes made their home.
He was predeceased by his parents; brothers: Edward, Roland, Samuel, Ulric, Wilfred, Clarence and Henry; a sister, Theresa Pac; a grandson, Winslow Gilman; and son-in-law, Guy Bourdeau. He is survived by his son Roger D. Cote of Greentown, PA; his daughters, Denise Bachand and her husband, Edward of Canterbury, CT, Renee S. Bourdeau of Lugoff, SC; as well as two grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
A joint memorial service for Rene and Nina will be held on December 15, 2014 at 11:00 am at the State Veteran’s Cemetery in Middletown. Military honors to follow.
