

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Charles James Frankel III, age 80, on September 6, 2024, in Palm Beach Florida. Charles, affectionately known as "Charlie" by those who loved him, passed away peacefully with his daughter Kimberly by his side.
Born February 14, 1944, in Charlottesville, VA beloved son of the late Charles J. Frankel II, M.D. and Gladys Birmingham Frankel. He attended St. Anne’s-Belfield School and Woodberry Forest. He would then attend The University of Virginia, where he would play football. Mr. Frankel grew up riding horses and playing tennis under the tutelage of Mike Dolan at Farmington Country Club. He was a devoted husband and father, known for his kind heart, sharp wit, and unwavering loyalty to those he held dear.
Mr. Frankel began his banking career at Wachovia Bank and Trust Company in Winston-Salem, NC. He held a number of senior and executive management positions over the years. At SunTrust South Florida-Executive Vice President and Senior Lending Officer, Pan American Bank of Broward-President, NationsBank-Southeast US Private Banking Executive, and US Trust Company-Managing Director and Division President.
During his career, he held several not-for-profit and community leadership positions, as well. This included the President of Greater Fort Lauderdale Touchdown Club, Chairman of the Blockbuster Bowl, board member of the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks, Recreation, and Beaches Advisory Board, Chairman of the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, the Boca Raton Historical Society, Bethesda Hospital Foundation, Town of Gulf Stream Architectural Review and Planning, and others. Professionally, he was a member of Robert Morris Associates National Private Lending Committee and the American Bankers Association National Private Banking Committee. More recently he served on the board and executive Committee of the Palm Beach Rehabilitation Center for Children and Adults, where he was also treasurer and interim president.
His past memberships included the Lauderdale Yacht Club and the Gulf Stream Bath & Tennis Club (past president). Current memberships include the Everglades Club and the Farmington Country Club.
Mr. Frankel was an Episcopalian since childhood serving as a crucifer, lector, acolyte, and chalice bearer over the years. He and his wife were active members of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, where he was a head usher, lector, and past member of the Vestry and Treasurer.
He was pre-deceased by his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Dawn Marie Hornung, and by his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Mavourneen Frankel Allemand (Whitney) and his grandchildren, Emily Birmingham Allemand and Whitney Charles Allemand.
Mr. Frankel’s remains will be interred along side his loving wife’s in the Columbarium at Bethesda-by-the-Sea.
