The Falcon family has lost our beloved brother Dan. He succumbed to an almost four-year battle with cancer. Appropriately for Danny, he died on a Friday night – right on time to head to his next party in the sky.
Many reading this will be shocked to learn of his passing. Not surprising to us, given that Dan rarely if ever complained about his situation. In fact, if you spoke or ran into him, he’d be as upbeat and positive as ever. More likely, he’d find humor in the indignities he had to suffer. Dan worked for many years with Mercedes-Benz in North Vancouver, where he was known for his reliability, his easygoing nature, and the genuine care he showed to colleagues and customers alike. He took pride in his work and built lasting friendships throughout his career.
Dan was a bright light in our family of six boys. Our social director. The person who remembered everyone’s birthday or special occasion. Though Dan remained a bachelor, he was never alone. He deeply loved his family and friends, and socializing was one of his greatest joys. He loved any kind of family gathering or party. He was usually the first to arrive and always the last to leave. He loved family, friends, wine and sharing a laugh with whoever he met. Dan’s social life took a blow when he lost two of his close friends, Bill and Fareed, in quick succession. Fortunately, his golfing buddies Don, Lee and Burke kept him busy working on his game.
He found solace in his extended family. He never missed a Halloween with nieces Josephine and Rose – always dressing up as Dracula and scaring the local neighborhood kids with his extremely realistic costume. Christmas was Dan’s favorite time of year bar none. He spent the Christmas period visiting various family members and ensuring he touched us all. Family dinner with brother Michael and Catherine and our extended family/friends kicked things off. Nothing gave him more joy than seeing all his nieces and nephews - Mary, Kelsey, Alison, Jade, Avi, Josephine, Rose and the newest additions, Wyatt, Easton, Maisie and Zoe. Choosing a Christmas tree with Dan was always interesting. Any tree selected was never large enough…another Dan tradition. Finally, he’d head up with our mom and brother Larry to our brother Dave and Bev’s home in Lac Le Jeune for a guaranteed white Christmas. During his final years, his lifetime friend Stewart was his constant companion and supporter. Driving to/from appointments and occasionally sneaking Dan out of the hospital for a BBQ and swim at his family home, before whisking him back in the evening. A true friend, our family is forever grateful for his support.
Towards the end, Dan had planned to host a party called “I’m Not Dead Yet”. He loved the idea of having one last great send off with his family and friends. Sadly, once he stopped the punishing treatment regimen, his condition worsened quickly. We’ll fulfill his wishes, because he sure as hell would want a party – so we’re organizing a celebration with family and friends for Dan on June 6th at Full Throttle Auto Spa located at 1110 West 14th Street, North Van. 5:00pm start. Just bring yourself and any stories you may want to share about Dan. We know brother Dan is holding a seat at the bar for us all. We miss you brother Dan; you were loved more than you could imagine! Cheers! In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to VGH Foundation c/o Dr. David Huntsman, Cancer Research.
