After a well-lived, healthy and full life, Don left us on July 15, 2015 in his 89th year.
Don was predeceased by parents Marjorie and Ralph of Castlegar, BC. He is lovingly survived by wife Marjorie of 60 years, son Robert, daughter-in-law Una and devoted granddaughter Laura Marjorie. Don was a professional engineer who worked for Sandwell and BC Hydro in his career. Don’s passions were the sea and the mountains. He fulfilled both in his travels in Canada and abroad. He hiked the Swiss Alps, the New Zealand Southern Alps, and the Dolomites in Italy, our Canadian Rockies and coastal mountains. His sailing passion in both Monashee and Skilfish brought him to Desolation Sound and Gulf Islands numerous times. With Skilfish, he enjoyed a successful racing career for many years; a highlight was winning the Juan de Fuca race in 1977. As a long-term member of West Vancouver Yacht Club, serving as commodore in 1981, it brought him many friendships and adventures. Don was a skilled woodworker from building his first boat, Monashee, to designing and building furniture; he was truly talented in this craft. He was often accompanied in his hiking and sailing pursuits with his long time friend George Nightingale. Don had such a gentle nature that was loved by all. His love of family was so evident and was reciprocated. The family wishes to thank the staff of West Van Care Centre who looked after Don so well in his last two years.
In memory of Don, donations to Parkinson Society Canada (www.parkinson.ca or 1-800-565-3000) would be appreciated.
A celebration of Don’s life will take place at West Vancouver Yacht Club at a later date.
