My mother's starlight forever streams.

Walking the streets from the parked car to the hospital each day these past three weeks I saw many Canadian flags; in windows, on cars, on strollers and wondered ‘what is a Canadian’? When trying to gather my mother’s life into a few words, I instead found myself thinking about the question “What is a life?” 

When I stop to consider that question, all life forms seem improbably amazing. But human life seems even more so; how does it come and where does it go? I thought about each person’s life as an infusion. What is an infusion? Maybe our best known infusion would be a brewing pot of tea; perhaps a very poor analogy to a life.

However, I found a life is like a living and conscious infusion, replenished each minute and made up of the thinking and the feeling around daily, hourly experiences from birth onwards, but sometimes infusing over many decades of years. 

This stream of continuous life experience is filtered always through the human prism that is our consciousness, which, at birth, is a prism of simple character and emotion, later to be mediated by values, complicated by ideologies; and further down the years, if we’re lucky, enriched by wisdom. 

So that a life of 88 years, more than 32,000 days, must be an infusion unique and unimaginably complex; all the joy, pain, love and suffering; through childhood, school, teenage years, through working and married life and childbirth; through years of depression and war; who could say what a life of 88 years might be like if one could sample it, like a sip of tea.

In my view, my mother’s life was a marvelous live streaming, like one star in the universe, continuously reflecting back to God a tiny mote of It’s own divine being; my mother’s life to me, was no less than God Itself in artful creativity. 

My stepson Scott, on learning of Gaya’s death, offered this quote by Australian author, George Alexander, from his book ‘Sparagmos’. He wrote “Light becomes leaf becomes coal becomes light”.

Thank you mum, for your life and that which you gave to me.

Dear Graham and Moira,
We have lost a dear, dear friend and are very sad and yet so happy that her passing was so
peaceful and wonderfully supported by her devoted kids. How we shall miss her bright and
enthusing presence, even by her always eagerly anticipated emails. She was a wonderful,
vital woman with a highly ethical and wonderfully philosophical grip on living. She had the
great bonus of knowing she had borne and raised a large and very caring family and revelled
in the bountiful blessings that brings.
As you probably know, we met her circuitously through my service , short though it was, and
friendship with her brother-in-law, Peter, a great guy. In a way, it was his little legacy to me
and I loved him for it.
Both Florence and I loved her very much.
Thank you both so much for taking time out to let us know. Our love to you both,
