Dear Elaine & Family,
The members of Fraserview's pro-shop staff are all shocked and saddened by Ken's sudden death.  Ken was one of the regulars here and his presence always enlightened the staff.  We greatly appreciated his gratitude towards our staff and his love for golf.  On behalf of Fraserview's pro-shop staff, our deepest sympathy, thoughts and sadness are with you.

Our hearts are with you.  We have years of wonderful memories of Ken...from living across the street for decades and then following the huge success of the store.  We are so happy he retired when he did and had time to spend with family and on the golf course.

When I think of Ken sometimes I chuckle.  The first time I met him was when Jarrett was living in Comox and wanted us to meet his future in-laws.  Jarrett said "Mom, you and Ken have something in common.  You both love to garden but Ken is really good at it!"  When I saw the blue hydrangea I was excited and asked how he did it.  Modestly he says "it grows that way".  This summer when I am in my garden (trimming my white hydrangea) I am sure that when I look up toward the sky I will think of Ken.. oh no! not because he is gone but because I will see a yellow bird house sitting on top of my garden shed.  Ken made it for Wayne and had Elaine stuff it in her suitcase when she came across Canada to Newfoundland for Tara and Jarrett's Newfie wedding.  Like I said, I have to chuckle ... and may even hear him chuckle back.

Well Ken, wherever you are I am sure the hydrangeas are true blue and the birds are singing.  May God remember you as you both have something in common, He loves nature too.

Elaine, I am so sorry to hear that Ken passed away so quickly after he went to the hospital.  However, as you stated, it is perhaps better that he did not suffer longer or be drugged to the hilt.  The death of a loved one though leaves such a hole in your heart and as you said, you will miss little things like his sense of humour.  I hope that sharing with your family can ease your lost.  Actually I found it comforting to talk about my parent's lives, etc. after the shock of losing both of them in two months.  It gets easier but still hurts at times when you want to tell  that person something and realize they aren't there anymore.  Do take care of yourself and let others help you and we look forward to seeing you at the next book club meeting if you are up to it.

My memories of Ken revolve around two things. First, his tireless work ethic that helped him and Elaine create a very successful butcher shop in Burnaby, and secondly his "steal the show" sense of humor that would pop up at a moments notice. One of my fondest memories of Ken was at one of Tara's birthday parties, where Ken joined in at about the half way mark and entertained the heck out of a room full of guests for nearly an hour and a half. It's a happy memory, filled with laughter and the love of a very wonderful family that I've been  privileged to know for almost 20 years. 

Thank you Ken for those laughs and many other great memories. R.I.P.

The eulogy was a wonderful tribute to a very special person.  We didn't get to know him much but you always seemed so happy together.  I trust some of the family has been with you.  I do hope you are all doing okay.  It is good that Darren is in the city as Tara is a long ways away when she goes home.  Life just seems to be going by too quickly.

Hello Elaine.  I received an email from Mary a couple of days ago telling me that Ken had died after a short illness.  I'm so very sorry.  It seems just a short while ago that we were all together playing golf.  I will always remember Ken at Fraserview having a drink and teasing us after our games.  I think he especially liked watching us try to get over the ravine on #18.

The eulogy gave me some idea as to your lifetime together as well as your day to day working career which I had never known.  A time like this is very hard when you have shared work and fun together.  Our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.  It is good that Darren is close by.  Upon seeing the obit first I thought that Ken's passing was sudden but by reading the eulogy I realize that he had been sick.  You are truly a brick to be able to care for him at home.  I really admire some one like that.

Just watched the slideshow. One can see the love he had for his family in the photos. One cannot feel too sad for a life well lived, just wish it could have been longer.

Your news about Ken's death was sad but also it made me think of reasons to be thankful.  As you said, he did not have a long, painful death.  It was on his own terms.  Most importantly, his family was with him.  Just as you and Ken supported each other throughout your lives together, you were there to support him through his final months.  You respected his wishes and did what you could for him, no matter the cost to you.  What greater gift can a loving partner give to her life mate?  I admire your courage and compassion for doing that for Ken, just as I admire Ken for facing his greatest challenge on his own terms.

Please extend my sincere sympathy (and Nathan's) to Tara and Jarrett and Darren and Gigi.  Hold each other tight and gently brush away the tears.

Please let me know if there is ANYTHING I can do.  What I learned from my mom's death is that I can't do it alone and need to accept offers of help.
