June 18, 1933 – August 23, 2025
Robert (Bob) Findlay peacefully passed away on August 23, 2025. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Bob lived a life full of adventure, love, and generosity. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Dorothy, his parents Robert and Margaret, and his brother Ron. He is survived by his five children: Heather (Leo), Rob, Tracey, Scott (Kim), and Shane; and eight grandchildren: Amanda, Lauren, Halle, Julia, Robbie, Taya, Amelia, and Luke. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Bob’s caregiver, Sarah, for her exceptional care and kindness over the past six years.
Bob immigrated to Long Island, New York, with his family in the late 1930’s where he made lifelong friends in Rockville Centre. In 1945, Bob and his brother Ron began attending Rothesay Netherwood School in New Brunswick. There Bob discovered his love for hockey, golf, tennis, and basketball, many of which he would continue for the rest of his life. His time at Rothesay was deeply formative, and he remained a dedicated alumnus serving on committees and boards to support the school.
Bob graduated as a mechanical engineer from McGill University in 1957. He was a proud member of his fraternity (Phi Delta), where he forged lifetime friendships. After graduation, Bob began his career with Ingersoll Rand in the Maritimes. In April 1960, he married the love of his life, Dorothy. In 1961, they moved to North Vancouver. Bob then joined MacMillan Bloedel in 1964, working in Nanaimo and Port Alberni before being transferred to head office. Bob became CEO of MacMillan Bloedel and held that position until he retired in 1997. He continued to sit on a number of boards, including Scotiabank and Methanex.
A passionate sportsman, Bob was a coach and mentor for his family and friends. He was an avid windsurfer and sailor, skied and played hockey into his 80s, and was still playing golf this past year.
Bob and Dorothy built a life filled with love, laughter and adventure. They were true companions who enjoyed skiing in Whistler, beachcombing at Long Beach, and travelling the world with their friends. Their greatest joy was found in each other’s company and time spent with their children and grandchildren. Dorothy’s passing left a profound void in Bob’s life, but he carried her memory with grace and positivity every day.
Bob was an exceptional father who taught his children the value of hard work, enjoying life, and learning from every experience, which they will be forever grateful for.
As per Bob’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held in his memory.
