After a long battle with dementia our Mom, Shirley Anne Hunt, (Savin) died February 10th, 2022. Shirley was born on November 8, 1935 to Evelyn Savin, (Wicken), and Ernest Savin of Regina, Saskatchewan. She was the second of five children and pre-deceased by her parents, older sister Joan and husband Bob.
The family moved to New Toronto and later Oakville, where Mom’s siblings, Rick, Judy (Smye) and Doug were born. Mom attended Oakville Trafalgar High School, became involved with the young people’s group (AYPA) and the choir at St. Jude’s Anglican Church and started her career as a Legal Secretary in her teens. Music and singing were always passions for Mom, a highlight of which was being recorded singing the Messiah – we still have the vinyl record!
Mom and Dad met at sister Joan’s wedding to Gordon French, Dad’s first cousin, and then again at the christening of Joan and Gord’s first daughter, Jennifer. Romance bloomed and Shirley and Bob were married on September 19, 1958. Two years later they welcomed daughter, Judy and five years later, son Rob. The family enjoyed many summers at the Featherstone Point cottage Dad and his father built on Lake Erie; this truly was Mom’s happy place. In 1975, Dad accepted a transfer to the West Coast where the family settled in Coquitlam, British Columbia. During her time in BC, Mom continued work as a legal secretary and joined the parish of Holy Trinity Cathedral in New Westminster, where she was active in the choir, organizing the alter staff, reading lessons and serving on church council.
After the death of her beloved husband Bob, Mom decided to return to Oakville in 1989 where she worked at CAW Legal Services until her retirement in 1999. Mom continued visiting the cottage at Featherstone Point and spending time with friends and family, travelling to BC twice a year to visit with Judy, Rob and their families.
Sadly, Dementia began to take a toll on Mom’s health, and she moved back to BC in 2013 eventually moving into Inglewood Care Centre in West Vancouver. The wonderful nursing staff and care aides at Inglewood provided great comfort to Mom, and they were fond of her humour, laughter and big smiles.
Shirley, “Anne with an e” is best remembered for her love of life and family and for her ability to
socialize with people of all ages, learning all she could about everyone she met.
Rob, wife Karen, Judy, husband Allan, and son Alex are grateful that Mom slipped quietly away in her
sleep, finding rest and peace after a long battle.
There will be a celebration of life held for Mom on Saturday, March 26 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm at Holy
Trinity Cathedral in New Westminster, with the internment in the Holy Trinity Memorial Gardens and reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice or the Alzheimer’s Society in Mom’s name would be appreciated.
