Leonard James Myers, 86 years of age, passed away Friday afternoon April 25, 2014. He has gone happily forward to that great Boy Scouting adventure in the sky. He was forever involved as a Scout Master and Master Scout trip organizer/leader for countless youths, experiencing their first time in the great outdoors on adventurous camping, canoeing, and hiking trips. He was recently awarded a medal for Sixty-five years of service to Boy Scouting. Leonard began Scouting as a Sea Scout and spent the early part of his life exploring, boating, and skiing the back bays and coves of Lake Charles and the Calcasieu River. Leonard also loved building and was a jack of all trades. He built his own house, the Scout Hut, home of Troop 86, and many of the wooden and rope bridges that span the creeks of Scout Camp Edgewood. He loved plants and left a heritage of thousands of iris that now line many of those bridges. In later years he spent many hours devoted to working wood into wonderfully complex and diverse designs of bird house.
Leonard and his brother Thomas were like fathers to the nieces and nephews of the Anna Gribble family and he is survived by children Lyn, Lori, and Moni, and grandchildren James and Aryn Mann, and Jacklyn, Taylor, Olivia, and Jerod Jones. With Dad and Grandpa, there was never a dull moment; life was full of excitement and adventure.
He is survived by siblings Janet, Peggy, Donald, Louis, and Wayne. He will join in heaven, his wife Majorie, his parents George W. and Yola and siblings Anna, Verna, Thomas, and Earl.
Leonard’s memorial service will be held Saturday, May 3, Hixson Funeral Home, Westlake, La. Visitation will begin at 1:00, with service at 2:00.
