Duane was born on February 9, 1929 in Grand Island, Nebraska and had called Simi Valley home for 48 years before becoming a resident at Brighton Gardens in Camarillo. He and his wife Jean, of 52 years traveled the United States and lived in many areas of the country before settling in Simi Valley. In 1960 they established Simi Valley Electric Co., where Duane was able to contribute to the growth of Simi Valley. The respect of his former employees continues today. He took pride in a well completed job no matter if it was a service call or finishing one of the many schools in the area. He and Jean worked together until the business was sold in 1986. Upon retirement they enjoyed traveling with their family and friends, especially in their motor home. Their role as parents and grandparents were second to none.
Duane was a veteran of the Navy where he learned the electrical trade. He was a charter member of the Simi Valley Rotary Club where he served as president from 1969 – 1970. Through Rotary and the business community Duane and Jean made many long lasting friendships. Duane was a member of the United Methodist Church in Simi Valley and a supporter of the Simi Valley Historical Society.
Duane is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Joe Malkinson; grandson and his wife Brian and Leah Malkinson; brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Agnes Whitefoot; sister and brother-in-law Marylou and Carl Schubert and many nieces and nephews.
Duane was preceded in death by his loving wife Jean; brother Harry Whitefoot; sister Joyceann Whitefoot; and parents Harry and Lula Whitefoot.
We would sincerely like to thank Brighton Gardens for the love, compassion, and respect they showed Dad as they cared for him for eighteen months. You knew Dad as the quick witted, kind gentleman that we all love. We toast you, Lily, Alma, Jackie, Annie, Toni, Monica, Alma and all the caregivers. Thank you to Vitas Hospice for the comfort you gave Dad in the last week.
A private family service will be held. So, if you are having lunch with the SLOBS share a memory of Dad. If you’re having dinner with your family or friends, raise a glass of merlot and share a smile. This is what Dad would want, fond memories and laughter. As he used to say, “A kind word and a smile is all I need”.
