Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputy, Yevhen Kostiuchenko (affectionately known as Eugene), passed away on October 28th, 2014, while on duty, after being struck by a drunk driver. Eugene was 41 years old and is survived by his father, Anatoliy; his mother, Nadiia; and his brother, Oleksandra (Alex) who reside near Kiev, Ukraine. Eugene is also survived by his wife, Maura; and his two sons, Tristan and Justin who reside in Camarillo, CA.
Eugene was raised in the Ukraine and earned his degree in eastern languages from the Red Banner Institute of Military Science in Moscow. He was fluent in English, Farsi and Russian. As an officer in the Ukrainian military, Eugene quickly promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He soon found himself travelling throughout the world, assisting with translations and investigating transnational crime.
In the late 90’s, Eugene traveled to the United States to assist the FBI with a case involving international money laundering. It was during this visit that he met his wife, a Special Agent with the FBI. Their cooperative efforts led to the convictions of many international criminals. Throughout the investigation, a strong bond developed between them which eventually led to marriage. Eugene made the difficult decision to leave his beloved family and country to begin a new life with Maura. As a man of deep convictions, he was drawn to serve his community, and within a short period of time, began working with the Ventura County Office of Emergency Services. Eugene pursued his dream and attended the academy, achieving the position of Sheriff’s Deputy where he proudly served for 11 years.
Eugene was a selfless man who loved his family, his friends, his dogs and all of God’s creatures. His passions included good Ukrainian vodka, wine tasting, cigars, the LA Kings, hiking, kayaking, cars and swimming at the beach regardless of the temperature. Anyone who knew Eugene loved him dearly.
Animal rescue causes were dear to Eugene's heart. Donations may be made in his honor to Ventura County Animal Services at www.vchca.org/animal-services.
