On this Father's Day weekend 2022,
 I am remembering some of Dad's favorite movie quotes:

John was my first boss and later became a good friend. I was just out of college and he was a great mentor and inspired me with his thinking and taught me skills of communication and presentation. I owe a lot of my success in my career to him. He was kind and affectionate and we always had a good laugh when we chatted or met. Great memories and my sincere condolences to the family. Please visit us if you come to Pittsburgh.

My father was truly a Renaissance man.
“Can’t every dad do the things that mine can?”
A systems analyst for SDC*,
His talents were broader, as you will now see.
He directed and acted at times on the stage.
An avid reader, he’d recall every page. 
He’d take us to productions of plays galore,
And after got autographs at the stage door.
Great classic movies were on the TV,
He cherished his collection of tape and DVD.
He’d take us to concerts at the Hollywood Bowl.
Listening to music would always feed his soul.
Visits to museums would fill weekend hours,
When visitors came, we’d show them Watts Towers.
Among his travels was Alaska by ship,
But our Kenyan safari was his favorite trip.
His use of cameras was not a short stint,
He moved from the darkroom to digital print.
He later made sculptures of clay, stone, and wood,
His carvings and linocuts were also quite good.
A collector of Netsukes, old coins, and such,
Treasure hunting was something he liked very much.
He could build or fix with an array of tools,
With such a sharp mind, he didn’t suffer fools.
His passion for politics never did taper -
For decades, his letters were in the Times** paper.
His words are with me – I still quote things he’d say. 
I relied on his wisdom until his last day.

I  visited John, the father of my dear friend Katie , twice in his home, once in 1985 and once in 2019.  In between I heard snippets from Katie and feel like I knew him more than my two visits might indicate.  In addition to his wonderful sense of humor, inquisitive mind, and love of the arts, he himself was an artist.  I'm honored to be getting some of his sculptures to put in my home.  I am so happy to have known him and especially for our visit together in 2019.
