Captain Michael Anthony Flannery, retired from the Ventura County Fire Department, passed away on March 5, 2024. He was born on July 10, 1943 in Venice, California and was the second of 13 children born to Francis and Julia Flannery. After a short move to Kimball, South Dakota, the growing Flannery family returned to California where Mike was raised in Mar Vista and West Los Angeles. He attended St. Joan of Arc grade school and graduated from St. Monica’s High School in 1961. Go Mariners!
In 1961, determined to support his country, Mike enlisted in the US Army and volunteered multiple times for duty in Viet Nam, but the Army had other plans. After he completed his Basic Combat Training at Fort Ord, CA, Mike was assigned to the 101st Airborn Division at Fort Campbell, KY as a Mortarman, then he attended parachute jump school at Fort Benning, GA. Mike quickly progressed to the rank of Sergeant. During his career he completed 53 jumps and earned his Master Parachutist Wings. For a time he taught classes in Small Arms Use and Maintenance to Cadets at West Point Academy. After becoming a Jumpmaster, he supervised group jumps for paratroopers.
After an honorable discharge, Mike again offered his service to his country by joining the Ventura County Fire Department. For a while he worked as an engineer on the hook and ladder truck then went on to earn the rank of Captain. In that capacity, Mike had the honor and responsibility of opening 4 new stations. After 30 years of service, Mike retired from his last assignment at station 44, Wood Ranch, in Simi Valley.
Spending time with his wife of 54 years, their children and grandchildren ranked at the top of the list for Mike whether it be family trips, camping, sports, Scouts, coaching Little League, or simply visiting friends and relatives.
In retirement Mike joined the Elks Club of Thousand Oaks which was near his home in Agoura Hills where he lived for 39 years. As an Elk he served as the “Exalted Ruler” for a period of time and was famous for his superb corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s day. He also participated in various Lodge activities, particularly cruises and camping with friends. Other pursuits which Mike enjoyed included reading, target practice at the gun range, mountain biking, playing pool and, of course, cheering on the Dodgers whether on TV or in person!
Mike leaves behind his wife, Mary, children Kim, Shannon, Sean and Ryan , as well as 7 grandchildren, 11 surviving siblings, 28 nieces and nephews.

May the road rise to meet you, Mike,
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and the rain fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
