1963-2012
On Saturday, January 28th at 6:18 p.m., a beautiful son, brother and friend passed away after surviving one hell of a fight for 27 years.
Michael was born on January 4th, 1963 to Hank and Pat Russell in Canoga Park CA. He is survived by his mom and two sisters, Teresa Russell and Michele Dougherty and brother inlaw Clint Dougherty. He is predeceased by his father, Hank Russell.
Michael was raised in Westlake Village and at age 4 his father introduced him to golf where he spent many years perfecting his game. A scratch golfer at Agoura High school, he later attended ASU with the high hopes of going professional. He studied business communications and worked part time in sales. In his senior year Michael was diagnosed with a brain tumor which would change his life forever and the lives of those who loved him. For the next 27 years his father would be a huge support while his mother stood by his side to help him journey through this very difficult and challenging time.
After several brain surgeries and lots of rehab, Michael attended special classes at Moorpark Jr. Collage to try and regain some basic skills. Legally blind he later entered into various sports activities including the Special Olympics where he took home a gold medal and a few trophies. Mike enjoyed music, dancing, good food and deep conversations about life. He was at his best when it came to summing up life’s comedies in a one liner. We loved his big grin and his hardy laugh.
Michael did not get to live the life he dreamed of as a young man but instead always hoped his life would some how make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Through a mothers love, he cultivated a deep faith in God and lived his life with courage. He was a champion to his family and friends and gave us blessings and teachings that continue to unfold in our lives.
We want to thank all our family and friends for the many helping hands and special times you all gave to Mike. He was loved and adored by so many and we will miss him deeply. He is flying free now and we feel his joy as he begins his new journey. God bless you Michael and thank you for all the love you shared with us.
