Nat was the third of three children born to Isidor and Bertha Gilbert on September 22, 1921 in New York. They lived there until 1930, when Nat and his family then moved to Los Angeles, California by way of steamship to New Orleans, from where they completed their trip by train to Los Angeles.
Nat served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, in the Japanese Theater of Operations from October, 1942 to November, 1945, where he was assigned to Headquarters of the 13th Air Force Service Command, from which he was Honorably Discharged as a Master Sergeant.
After discharge from the service, Nat attended the USC School of Business, where he majored in Accounting. During his studied at USC, he was admitted to membership in Beta Gamma Sigma - Commerce Honor Society; as well as Phi Kappa Phi - AII University Honor Society; and Beta Alpha Psi - The National Honors Fraternity for accounting and finance students. After graduation from USC in 1948, Nat passed the California C.P.A. Exam, and went on to practice public accounting.
In 1950 he met Eleanor Soroky and, on September 10, 1950 they were married. They were blessed with three wonderful children: Ken Eugene – born September 4, 1952, Lisa Kay – born July 23, 1954, and Richard Ira – born July 3, 1959.
In order to further expand his career, and provide for his family, Nat attended Law School at UCLA. Thereafter, in January, 1961, he was admitted to practice law by the Supreme Court of California, and the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. In 1975 Nat was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United Stated. In 1976 he was awarded a Certificate of Specialization in Taxation Law by the State Bar of California. He was passionate about his work and practiced Law in Beverly Hills, California for over 35 years.
Throughout Nat and Eleanor’s life together, they immersed themselves in hard work, caring for each other, and provided a quality life for their three children that were the bonding union of the marriage. They were also blessed with seven grandchildren, for whom they had tremendous love and pride, which included Matthew and Nicole Gilbert – born to Ken and Paulette Gilbert; Amanda, Jessica and Hayley Gilbert – born to Rich and Lisa Gilbert; and Kyle and Graham Mekjian – born to Michael and Lisa Mekjian.
Nat and Eleanor’s enduring commitment and love for each other and their family has always been unwavering, and a source of strength and inspiration for their children and grandchildren. They are both dearly missed by us all, and will forever be in our hearts.
