Stephen Caminiti of Thousand Oaks, California passed away peacefully with his family by his side on July 1, 2018 after a hard-fought illness at the age of 71. He was born on August 15, 1946 to the loving family of Ruth (Guerin) and Joseph Caminiti in Los Angeles California. The family moved to Woodland Hills, in 1958.
Steve was blessed with athletic gifts that were discovered and refined by Coach Bill Leeds at Crespi High School in Encino, California. While there, Steve earned two All American honors after achieving two national records in the high and low hurdles in one day.
At the University of New Mexico, Steve earned an All American award as a member of the 440 yard relay team, and he matched the world record mark in the indoor 60 yard low hurdles.
Steve channeled his love of Track and Field into helping student athletes achieve their highest potential. Throughout his 35-year track and cross country coaching and physical education career at Crespi and Reseda high schools, he and his coaching staff produced multiple league, city, and individual state championships. His successes granted him the 1996 LA City Section Honor Coach award and the 1999 CIF State Cross Country Honor Coach award. Although a teacher and coach by profession Steve’s greatest lessons were learned by example in the way he lead his life.
To those closest to him, Steve is known for his quick wit, humility, everlasting faith in God, and his strength and dignity while fighting the battle for his life. The training and dedication Steve learned as an athlete was easily transferred to everything that was important to him. As a dedicated and loving husband, father, step-father, and Papa to his grandchildren, he treasured his family as his greatest gift in life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years Pat Caminiti; his daughter Kris (Shawn) Blaney of Northridge; stepson Jay (Megan) Sramek of Simi Valley; stepdaughter Kari (Jeff) LaRock of Simi Valley; brothers John (Devra) Caminiti of Bakersfield and Jim (Tracy) Caminiti of Eureka; six grandchildren and nine nieces and nephews. Steve is preceded in death by his sister Judy (Mike) Sporman of Tehachapi, California.
Funeral services will be July 14, 2018 at 10:00 am at St. Paschal’s Catholic Church in Thousand Oaks. A private internment at Pierce Brother’s Mortuary will follow.
