I have a lot of memories with Mr. Barry Chau. I remember meeting Barry for the first time. The year was 1990. I was 17. I was in high school. I was dating his son, Phong. I’m Hmong. Thinking to myself, how am I going get Barry to like me? He probably don’t like me because I’m not Vietnamese… but that was not the case. Some months later, I won his heart. Barry is a sweet, loving man. He spoke broken english but always had a smile. Fast forward, seven years later, he is my father-in-law. I moved into the Chau’s home. He didn’t expect anything from me, no cooking, no cleaning. He just wanted me to feel comfortable and happy because that’s just the way he was…easy going, humbled. Living at the Chau’s was great but eventually Phong & I moved out to our little place because I was expecting. A month later, he’s a grandpa! My little girl, Kyra, was his princess. He loved her so much. She brought him so much joy. He always held Kyra and never let her down. At times I had to remind him not to hold her so much so she can learn how to crawl & walk. That didn’t work, she bypassed the crawling stage and started walking instead. I have a lot of memories with my father-in-law. He loves playing cards. His favorite game was Tien Len. His memory wasn’t good but his cards were always set correctly. He would win me & points at me, saying “I shoot you”. I’ll get you next time, dad. He loves sweets. Always had a sweet tooth. He also loves his coffee, Chalupa & Mexican pizza from Taco Bell but I believe his favorite was my beef stroganoff. I will cherish these memories of you, dad. 

Dad, thank you for accepting me into your family. Thank you for all the things you’ve done for my family. I will always remember your kindness, advice and contagious smile. You will be missed and forever be in our hearts.

Barry was our next door neighbor for the 20 plus years that we’ve lived in our home. 
He was the sweetest man who would come over from time to time just to chat & see how everyone in the family was doing. You would often see him outside nurturing his garden or taking his walks. He will be dearly missed by our family & the neighborhood of which he seemed to enjoy so much. RIP Kind Sir 🌺

We escaped from Vietnam in early 1979, arrived on Pilau Bidong Refugee camp, Malaysia on Mar 25, 1979.  He was the "lone rooster with his 3 baby chicks", at camp he made sure we got enough food, clothing, allowed me to sneak into a school to learn.  We resettled to the USA, Shreveport, Louisiana on Jan 30, 1980, after several months there, we took a long bus ride from LA to California.  Dad worked hard, went to night school, took ESL classes, trade school, and learned to drive a stick shift, bought his brown Pinto.  He was so proud of all his achievements, his work ethic was remarkable.  Dad sponsored my Mom, Grandmother, sister and brother in 1984, we were reunited as a family again.  Our family grew, and in 1985, my parents welcomed another son.  Sadly my Mom passed in 1991, Dad once again became Mom/Dad to six.  He never gave up on any of his children, no matter how old we were.  He loved his grandchildren so much..  My fondest memories were of Dad taking me to the airports for work and picking me up when I got home.  Eventually his memories failed him, and driving me so far was not possible, he would ask that I call him when I get to my destinations.  I will always be his lil girl, he'd say "I'm living with you, no matter what... keep me home".  He was home until the end, with his children, he knew we all loved him, that he had done his part.  I love and miss you so much Dad, until I see you again.

My earliest memory of my dad came when I was 8 ½ years old.  My mom, sister, grandma and I landed at LAX.  This was in my mind the first time I met my dad and siblings.  He sacrificed for his family and took my 3 older siblings to come to the US.  We were reunited as a family on January 23, 1984.  I grew up without a dad but was always loved from afar.
