

Edna Katherine (Smith) Hurst, 93, of Washington Township, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 25, 2024. Widow of James Hurst, her husband of 66 years, whom she married June 2, 1951. Devoted mother of James (Jody) Hurst, Kathy (John) Frey, Colleen Gagliostro, and William (Joan) Hurst. Dear sister of Gayle Reynolds and the deceased Patricia English and Mary Ellen Boatwright. Loving grandmother of Kyle Hurst, Kelly Hurst, James (Rachel) Hurst, Erin
Frey, Katlin (Kyle) Perkins, Teresa Dziob, Anthony Gagliostro, Emma Hurst, Molly Hurst, and Morgan Hurst. Doting great-grandmother of Liam Hurst, Quinn Hurst, Nash Perkins, and Nora Perkins.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, March 19, 1931, Edna was raised in New Jersey. For most of her adult life, she lived in the home she and James built in Washington Township, spending over two decades on her cherished mountainside in Delancey, New York. A dedicated worker, Edna managed the switchboard at Pascack Valley Hospital from 1966 until it closed in November 2007, despite retiring about 1994. Following her mother’s death in 1968, in gratitude for their aid, Edna volunteered for many years with the Washington Township Ambulance Corp. She was
an avid seamstress who enjoyed sewing dresses for daughters, outfits and quilts for her grandchildren, holiday crafts, and even band uniforms. A faithful Catholic, during her time in New Jersey, she belonged to Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, and in New York, she attended St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Delhi.
The family will receive their relatives and friends on Thursday, May 30 from 4-8 pm at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood. A Mass celebrating Edna’s life and faith will be held on Friday, May 31 at 11 am at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 668 Ridgewood Road, Washington Township. The interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park, 234 Paramus Road, Paramus.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Edna's memory may
be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.
