Frederick C. Meier, age 83, of Westwood, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 22. Frederick is survived by his loving children Thomas and his wife Mary and Susan Blake; his grandchildren Stephen and his wife Mary, Samantha, Christopher, Breanne, and Shannon and his great grandson, Frederick. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Arlene.
Fred grew up in New Milford, New Jersey and graduated from Bergen County Technical School in Hackensack as an auto-mechanic.
In 1961 Fred married the love of his life, Arlene, and moved to Westwood in 1966 where he raised his family. That same year Fred opened his own business, F & S Friendly Service in Hillsdale. In 1983 his son,Tom, joined him and they worked side by side for almost 40 years.
Fred continued to go to work every day despite his failing health. It was only during the past 10 months that you didn’t see Fred’s smiling face at the shop. From the time he opened his doors in 1966 you could always count on Fred for honest car repairs, a listening ear and a kind and generous heart.
For the past 35 years when Fred wasn’t working long hours you could find him sharing his joy and passion for Dirt racing with his son. Fred lived for Saturday Night Dirt racing, especially at Orange County Fair Speedway. He was Tom’s number one fan and Honorary Crew Chief. On off nights Fred could always be found turning a wrench at the race shop or watching videos of the races over and over again.
Fred was an icon in his work community as well as in his racing family.
