With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Gary T. Kose, of Saddle Brook, NJ on May 13, 2025, after a brief illness. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 29, 1954, Gary lived a life shaped by curiosity, intellect, and an unmistakable offbeat wit that brought laughter and insight to those around him.
From a young age, Gary’s mind was sharp, his humor uniquely his own, and his leadership evident - earning the rank of Eagle Scout in eighth grade. He graduated with honors from St. Thomas More High School, then pursued psychology at Temple University, where he graduated summa cum laude. While there, he worked for two years in the Child Development and Learning Center, associated with the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. His passion for learning led him to the City University of New York Graduate Center, where he earned his doctorate degree in psychology.
Gary dedicated more than 40 years to academia, shaping the minds of countless students. His career began as an Associate Professor at Rutgers University, where he laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to teaching and mentorship. He went on to inspire students at Bloomfield College, William Paterson University, and the College of Saint Elizabeth before establishing himself as a full Professor of Psychology at Long Island University. There, he served as the Chair of the Department and Director of the M.A. program in psychology for over three decades, guiding graduate students and helping many fulfill their aspirations of earning a PhD. Beyond the classroom, Gary was a prolific researcher and an engaged member of the academic community, presenting at conferences across the U.S. and Europe. Most recently, he authored "The Psychology of Problem Solving", further cementing his legacy in the field.
Yet, his true impact reached far beyond textbooks and lectures. So many of his students, past and present, speak of him with deep admiration, respect, and gratitude, recalling how his guidance shaped their lives in lasting ways. Many remained in close contact, transforming from students into lifelong friends—a testament to the warmth and generosity he shared so freely.
Above all, Gary cherished his family. He and Pat married on July 7, 1972, building a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Together, they raised Abigail, Ryan, and Molly, who brought him immense joy. His family grew to include his beloved grandchildren: Chloe and Julia (daughters of Abigail and Mike Peterson), Owen and Ella (children of Ryan and his wife, Erica), and Louis and Madelyn (children of Molly and her husband, Ryan Scavo).
Gary will be sorely missed. He was a kind, caring, selfless, and generous man whose love for his family will always remain. His wisdom, humor, and heart touched so many lives, and his presence will never be forgotten.
The family invites you to join them in celebrating Gary’s life on May 29th from 1–5 PM at Portobello Restaurant, located at 175 Ramapo Valley Road in Oakland, NJ (www.Portobellonj.com).
