John D. Bonner, born on September 22, 1946, passed away suddenly on February 21, 2018. Jack was born in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Josephine (nee Hegarty) & Harold Bonner. He loved his wife of 52 years Virginia (nee McIntyre), his five children; John, Beth, Michael, Laura and Mary Allison, as well as their spouses; Kathleen, George, Mandi, Brian and Lyon III. Jack cherished his thirteen grandchildren; Brendan, Zach, Emily, Jake, Caroline, Braden, Josh, Avery, Anna, Peyton, Addison, Lyon IV & baby Carter due in August. He will be lovingly remembered by his sister-in-law Eileen (nee McIntyre), his brother-in-law Thomas Morgan Sr., their son Thomas Morgan Jr., and his family, Shannon (nee Lorenze), and children Olivia & Thomas III.
Jack attended high school in New York City at Power Memorial. He was a member of the championship winning Power Memorial basketball team of 1963-1964, which was inducted into the CHSAA Hall of Fame and the New York City Hall of Fame. Jack considered Panthers’ head coach Jack Donohue a father figure. He was honored to be teammates and close friends with basketball Hall of Famer Kareem-Abdul-Jabar.
Jack attended college at Central Connecticut State in New Britain, CT, and moved back to Brooklyn upon graduation. Virginia and Jack then later moved their growing family to the suburbs of Hillsdale, NJ, which would become their life-long home.
Jack was a Property Manager for over thirty years in many premier Manhattan and tri-state high rise buildings.
Jack was an extremely caring man who would give the shirt off his back for any friend in need. He generously gave back and helped fund many college educations, as well as offering family and friends a multitude of jobs in his buildings in Manhattan.
Jack really enjoyed fine dining, history, classic movies, Broadway plays and music. He enjoyed vacations with his family, as well as attending sporting events at all levels, from the professional to his children and grandchildren. In his younger years, this Southpaw was very active and could be found at the local softball fields, golf courses, ski slopes, and of course, the basketball courts.
Jack will be greatly missed by everyone who ever knew him.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to JDRF and/or the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.
