March 16, 1936 – October 29, 2025
Joseph R. Consalvo was born in New York City. He was raised in the Bronx, where he developed a lifelong affection for the New York Yankees. The family later settled in Fort Lee, New Jersey. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.
A talented musician, Joseph played the clarinet and saxophone in numerous bands and orchestras during his younger years.
Joe believed deeply in faith, family, education, and hard work. He served with pride in the New York Civil Air Patrol, and later joined the National Guard, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class.
Joe’s professional life reflected his energy, intellect, and integrity. Over the years, he held positions with Hanover Bank, Dancer Fitzgerald Sample, Compton Advertising Agency, Group Health Insurance Company, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Siemens AG. His career was marked by dedication, insight, and a steady leadership that inspired those around him.
While in college, Joseph met the love of his life, Marie Consalvo (née Aqualina), in an economics class—a fateful meeting that blossomed into a partnership spanning more than six decades. They recently celebrated 65 years of marriage, a bond built on laughter, faith, family, and unwavering companionship.
Together, they raised three children. Christine Klecanda (Husband Robert), Philip Consalvo (life partner William Easterling) and Elizabeth Hoogendoorn (Husband Gerard.) He was the cherished grandfather of Alyssa Smith (Cody); Robert Klecanda, Kathryn Klecanda and Joris Hoogendoorn, and great grandfather of Santino and Christian Smith.
He was predeceased by his parents, Philip Consalvo and Christine (Manzone) his sisters Angela Licitro (husband Rosario) and Josephine Rufo (husband Joseph); and by his sister-in-law Grace Aqualina. He was also a devoted uncle to many beloved nieces and nephews.
Joe believed strongly in giving back. At Holy Trinity Church in Hackensack, he served as a Eucharistic Minister and provided pastoral care to patients at local hospitals. He also contributed his insight as a member of the Institutional Review Board at Hackensack Medical Center and as President of the Bergen County Allergy Foundation.
To his family, “Joey,” “dad,” and “Papa” were constant sources of wisdom, guidance, reassurance, and direction. His counsel was thoughtful, his humor ever-present, and his calm strength filled every room he entered.
Joseph and Marie built their lives in Hackensack and later in Woodcliff Lake, NJ, while cherishing time at their homes in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Long Beach Island, New Jersey—favorite retreats where he found renewal and shared countless family memories.
Joseph Consalvo’s life was defined by faith, family, and service. To those who knew him best, he was a source of wisdom, humor, and steady guidance. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love and gratitude.
