Mary Catalano

Mary Catalano, 84 years old of Hillsdale, NJ was called home to God on Saturday January 14, 2023. She was currently residing in The Family of Caring in Ridgewood, NJ. She was the beloved wife of the late Dominick Catalano. Devoted mother to son Anthony Catalano and wife Heidi of Westwood, daughter Mary Gangeri and husband Jeffrey Gangeri of River Vale, daughter Linda Zurich and husband James Zurich of Montvale and daughter Phyllis Hannigan and husband Vincent Hannigan. Loving grandmother to Daniel and wife Natassja, Alyssa and husband Jonathan, Caitlin, Erin, Anthony and fiancé Mary, Amanda, Taylor and husband Troy and Jim. Loving great-grandmother to Dominick, Logan, Bryson, Brendan, Waylon, Emalyn, Patrick and Kelley. Devoted sister to the late Kathleen Stoddard. Loving sister-in-law and friend to anyone who knew her. Mary was born in NYC and married Dominick the day after she turned 17. They moved to Hillsdale NJ to the home built by Dominick’s father. They raised 4 children in the home and resided there for 51 years before moving permanently to Eastham, Cape Cod. They were very involved in activities in the town, and also with the Westwood Elks. The Cape was where all their happiest memories were made with their family and friends. Mary loved her extensive gardens of flowers and plants that were nourished by the sea breeze. Her gardens were the envy of all her neighbors. All her grandchildren spent every summer at the Cape with her and Dominick experiencing the love only grandparents can give. Mary was an accomplished artist in her own right. She would paint in watercolors, also drawing the beauty around her. She loved to draw Mandalas to bring peace to herself and others. She was an avid crocheter and quilter and would explore all that the artworld could offer. Learning a new craft was a passion, but her real passion was reading. This is where you would find her most of the time, with a book in her hand absorbing all the fiction and nonfiction books she could. Mary also loved to bake and cook a good Italian meal. She lovingly passed on her skills to her grandchildren as they spent time with her in her kitchen. She will be missed by her family and friends. The family will receive friends at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood, NJ on January 18th from 4-7PM. The Funeral Mass will be held on January 19th at 10:00 am at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, 69 Valley Street, Hillsdale, NJ.
