Robert Morton May

Bob was born on August 23, 1936 in Cairo, Illinois where his father, Lee and mother, Bea owned the local clothing store. Bob left Cairo in 1954 to attend Miami University of Ohio where he met his wife Roberta (Bobbie) on his second day at school. Bob was an avid ham radio operator and local University DJ, often sending out messages on-air to Bobbie. Bob was an active ROTC member, rising to lead the organization.

Upon graduation he married Bobbie on August 3, 1958 and joined the US Air Force where he served as First Lt. until 1962. He then joined IBM, first in Sales and then moving into Marketing in Cleveland, OH, Lexington, KY (“Go Cats”), Boulder, CO and then New Jersey.

During their 66+ years of marriage, Bob and Bobbie raised three children, Anita of New York City, Jeff (Claire) of Venetia, PA and Steve of Upper Saddle River, NJ, and two grandchildren, Zach and Matt of London, UK.

Bob was active in charity work, most importantly with his beloved Lion’s Club where he served in several offices including Secretary and President, was recognized with the prestigious Melvin Jones Award, and was a key fundraiser for more than 25 years. Those that knew him, always reached out when they needed a “Mr. Fix-it” or a helping hand. Upper Saddle River was his home of 48 years and he participated in all local aspects of town life including membership in CERT.

Bob was the consummate storyteller, always quick with a tale sharing moments throughout his life and adventures with his family and friends. Bob never met a stranger, and loved nothing more than giving his time, energy and wisdom to those in need. He will be greatly missed.

Memorial will be held on Wednesday, July 30th at 10a.m. at Becker Funeral Home in Westwood, NJ with burial at Old Stone Church Cemetery in Upper Saddle River, NJ immediately following.
