Beloved husband of Gale (nee. Detrolio) for 52 years. Devoted father to Amanda and Meredith, nurturing father-in-law to Jason Jacobs and Daniel Lemond, and doting grandad to Ethan Lemond. Loving brother to his sisters, Sharon Cristofalo and Susan Burke (predeceased), and brother-in-law Raymond Burke. Benevolent uncle to his nephew Eric Cristofalo and nieces, Lauren Cristofalo and Jacqueline Burke.
Stephen was born in West New York where he lived until age 10 when his family moved to Palisades Park. After marrying Gale in 1973, they lived in Saddle Brook, NJ, and he served on the Board of Education for a few years. A graduate of William Patterson University (BA), Montclair State University (MA), and Columbia University (EdD), Stephen began his career in the Oakland Public School system as a Speech Pathologist. He then worked at the New York Veterans Affairs (VA) as the Director of Audiology and Speech Pathology primarily in Manhattan, as well as the Brooklyn and Queens campuses for 32 years. He was passionate about providing care to veterans and providing leadership trainings at the VA. In addition, Stephen was an adjunct professor at both St. John’s University and City College of New York; specializing in ethics courses.
As an ardent Bridge player, Stephen would spend hours honing his craft with many friends. His “larger than life” personality enabled him to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, have many long-lasting friendships, and engage in laughter whenever possible. Stephen also loved and adored church organ music and was an active member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church community in Ridgewood, NJ, serving as a trustee for many years.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ridgewood, NJ on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Organ Fund at Bethlehem Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
