

Alfonso Luciano Garofalo, 96, of Wethersfield, beloved husband for 67 years of Santina (Marotta) Garofalo, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Hartford Hospital. He was born on December 11, 1928 in Tripoli, Libya, which at the time was a province of Italy, and was the son of the late Sebastiano and Natalina (Marotta) Garofalo. At the young age of 19, he traveled to France shortly after WW II to help rebuild Paris, where he learned the trade and became a mason. In 1956 he left his homeland of Priolo, Sicily, crossed the Atlantic and arrived at Ellis Island, NY. He was welcomed by relatives in Connecticut and attended Hartford State Tech, where he studied and learned the English language and how to read blue prints. He later met his wife Santina and they settled in the South End of Hartford to raise their four children. In 1974, he built his own one-family home in Hartford with the help of his brother Salvatore and his children. Alfonso was a skilled mason who spent much of his career working in the construction industry, and later was employed by the city of Hartford as a mason for 11 years. He loved to talk about his time living in France and wrote in his French journal every day. He enjoyed traveling to Italy, Washington, DC, Canada and Naples, FL to visit his sister-in-law Lucy and her husband, Mike Luisi. Most of all, he cherished time spent with his family.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he will be forever missed by his devoted wife Santina; his four children, Natalie Sutera and husband Salvatore and their two children, Carmelo Sutera and wife DeeAnna and Maria Russo and husband Brad, Angela Buonannata and husband Franco and their three children, Sarina Long and husband Chris, Sandra Shalvoy and husband Bryan and Giuseppe Luciano Buonannata, Sebastian Garofalo and wife Stephanie and their daughter Giuliana Garofalo and Linda Brannan and husband Joe and their daughter Isabella Brannan and his eight cherished great-grandchildren, Francesca, Evelyn, Capri, Milana, Olivia, Angelina, Adrianna and Giovanni Alfonso. He is also survived by his sister, Maria Marletta and many dear nieces, nephews and extended family members, both in the U.S. and in Italy. He was predeceased by his siblings, Santo, Salvatore, Lina, Lucia and Angela. The family would like to thank Patty V., Denine, Gabby, Julia and the many nurses, aides and doctors on Bliss 5 at Hartford Hospital that cared for Alfonso, as well as the HHC at Home team, especially his wonderful home health aide, Antonieta Evans.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 28 at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church of Christ the King Parish, 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield. Everyone is asked to please go directly to church. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Family and friends may call on Monday from 5-7 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield.
