Bernard “Bernie” Leavy, 62, of Wethersfield, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 4, 2026, leaving behind a family and community who loved him deeply. Born on January 9, 1964 in Hartford, Bernie was the beloved son of John Leavy, Sr. and Olimpia “Linda” (Rovazzini) Leavy, both of whom predeceased him.
Bernie grew up in Wethersfield, where he formed lifelong friendships, deep family bonds and the roots that would always call him home. Although he spent several years living in Cromwell, returning to Wethersfield later in life brought him tremendous joy, especially the moment he was able to reclaim his childhood phone number, a small but meaningful symbol of coming home.
Professionally, Bernie built a respected career in major account management, where he was known for his dedication to customers, his strong work ethic and his ability to build genuine relationships. His colleagues knew him as someone who showed up fully, with energy, commitment and a natural ability to connect.
A lifelong Connecticut resident, Bernie was known for his big heart, his humor and his unwavering loyalty to the people he loved. He was a passionate sports fan, the kind who could turn any game into a shared experience, and he especially loved taking his grandnephews to local sporting events, creating memories they will carry forever.
Bernie will be forever missed by his cherished daughter, Milanna and the light of his life, his grandson Elias, both of Indian Trail, NC, who he proudly mentioned in nearly every conversation. Bernie also leaves behind his brother, John Leavy, Jr. and sister-in-law, Laurie (Chapman) Leavy; his nephew and godson, Anthony “Tony” Leavy; four nieces, Diana Leavy Carta, Denise Leavy, Ariana Leavy and Albrie Leavy; eight grandnieces and grandnephews and a large extended family of cousins. His lifelong best friend, Anthony “Andy” Shelto from East Hampton, remained by his side through every chapter of his life, along with his wife Carolyn and their children Matthew, Elizabeth and Joshua. He is also remembered fondly by his ex-wife, Tanya Leavy from Indian Trail, NC, with whom he shared important years and lasting connections.
Bernie’s life was defined by family, friendship and the joy he found in simple moments: a good game, a good laugh and time spent with the people he loved. His presence filled a room, and his absence will be felt deeply by all who knew him.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, May 11 from 4-7 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield. Bernie will be laid to rest in North Carolina. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernie’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
