

Doris Louise (Sheller) Ellis, 96, of Rocky Hill, formerly of Wethersfield, beloved wife of the late Frederick Clark Ellis, Jr. died January 16, 2018. Born in Somerville, New Jersey she spent her early years in Plainfield, NJ. Upon graduation from Plainfield High School she worked at Bankers Trust Co. on Wall Street and was also on the staff at PYRAMID; a monthly banking magazine. Doris met Fred in 1947 and they married in 1948; making Wethersfield their home. With a degree in Chemistry from Trinity College, Hartford, Fred started his own business called Surface Research Co., a supplier of chemicals and machinery for the dry cleaning industry; a lifelong pursuit. Doris was a 50+ year member of First Church in Wethersfield, through which she and her husband had many close relationships. Doris and Fred were members of the Hartford Mineral Club and traveled throughout Asia, South and Central America in search of mineral specimens for their collection, while also satisfying Fred’s lifelong passion for hunting, fishing and marksmanship including a safari in Tanganyika with Earnest Hemingway’s son, Patrick, as their guide. They also enjoyed flying their Cessna 140 to neighboring areas with Fred as the pilot. Doris was a member of Wethersfield Country Club and volunteered at both the Wethersfield Historical Society and the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center. She was also a member and supporter of the Friends of Mark Twain. After moving to Wethersfield, Doris started a second career with the Connecticut Dept. of Revenue Services as a Senior Tax Examiner, from which she retired after thirty-five years of service. Doris leaves her loving relatives from New Jersey: Richard Shello of Long Valley, Kevin Shello and Steven Olexion of Branchburg, Amanda Olexion of Somerville,and Nicholas and Joseph Olexion of Piscataway.. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her sister Ann and her brother Peter. Doris also leaves many loving relatives from Fred’s side of the family.
Funeral services are private with burial in Village Cemetery, Wethersfield, with the Rev. Deryk Richenburg, Senior Minister of First Church officiating. There are no calling hours.
