

It is with profound sadness we announce the death of Josephine (Giarratana) Miele, of Wethersfield, beloved wife of Anthony 'Hap' G. Miele, on Saturday, July 18, 2009. She was born on October 31, 1929 in Hartford to the late Carmela and Salvatore Giarratana. She graduated from Bulkeley High School in Hartford, Class of 1947 and was employed by St. Francis Hospital prior to marrying and raising her family. She was a member of the Corpus Christi Women's Club. Her greatest joy was spending time with family. In addition to her husband of 57 years, Josephine is survived by her eight children: Elaine Matthews of Apex, NC; Joanne Callahan and her husband Timothy of Portland; Anthony Miele and his wife Charleen of Newington; Susan Miele and her husband Ronald Waid of Wethersfield; Jacqueline Tarascio and her husband John of Chapel Hill, NC; Stephen Miele and his wife Patricia of Berlin; David Miele of Rocky Hill; and Sharon Miele of Clearwater, FL. She also leaves her beloved grandchildren: Anthony III and Emily Miele; Vincenzo, Dominic, Lorenzo and Gianna Nicole Miele; Michael, Jr., Daniel, Brendan, and Corporal Ryan P. Matthews; Timothy Callahan; Ashley Waid; step-grandchildren: Maureen Callahan and Meaghan Callahan; and many nieces and nephews. Josephine is also survived by her two brothers, Nino Giarratano of Pinellas Park, FL and Rosario 'Sarino' Giarratano and his wife Pearl of Wethersfield; three sisters, Nella D'Onofrio and her husband Michael of Wethersfield; Gloria Ierna and her husband Joseph of St. Petersburg, FL; and Margherita Masters and her husband Chuck of St. Petersburg, FL; her sisters-in-law Anna and Jennie Miele of Hartford; and her life-long friends Virginia Pizzoferrato, Marion Kehoe, Theresa Candiloro, and Mary Ann Carelli (with Josephine also known as ('The Fab Five.') She was predeceased by an infant brother, Rosario; her dear sisters Elsie Boucher and Elene Cohun; brothers-in-law Thomas Miele, Roland Boucher and Michael Atwood; and a sister-in-law Jennie Miele. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 23, at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church, 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield. Everyone is asked to go directly to church. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. There are no calling hours.
