

Lydia Lucia (Scalora) Longo, 84 of Rocky Hill passed away peacefully on November 18, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. Lydia was born in Siracusa, Sicily on April 4, 1938, the daughter of Giuseppe and Josephine (Gionfriddo) Scalora. Lydia was raised in Siracusa, Sicily. When Lydia was 14 years old, she and her little brother Benny arrived alone at Ellis Island to live in Brooklyn, New York with their Aunt. Lydia and her brother went to school to learn English and Lydia worked extremely hard in her Aunt’s home to make a good life for themselves in New York. Lydia eventually went back to Sicily to be with her family and met her husband Salvatore "Sal" Longo. Sal and Lydia were married in Sicily in 1960 and traveled to the United States to settle in Hartford with other family members to live the American Dream. Lydia was employed with The State of Connecticut for 9 years and also with Aetna for 25 years. Sal and Lydia lived and raised their children in Rocky Hill. Lydia’s greatest joy in life was sharing her Italian food and Italian traditions with her family, especially her grandchildren and friends. Lydia was never happier than when everyone gathered around the table with an abundance of food, love and laughter. Lydia will always be remembered for her Sunday sauce, meatballs and cutlets. Her delicious homemade Italian cookies and pizzelles were the best! Lydia is predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Salvatore, and she is survived by her loving children, Paul Longo and wife Heidi of Salem, MA, Steven Longo and wife Theresa of Rocky Hill, Tina Signorello and husband Marco of Rocky Hill and Josina Demers and husband Elmer of Wethersfield. Lydia is also survived by her precious grandchildren that will forever miss their beautiful “Nonna”, Steven Gulioso and his partner Ashley Angers of Wethersfield, Marissa Andexler and husband Brandon of Danielson, Rachel, Katelyn and Alyssa Longo of Rocky Hill and Salvatore and Adriana Signorello of Rocky Hill. Lydia also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, her brother Salvatore Scalora and wife Claudia of Deep River, her brother Benny Scalora and wife Vincenzina of Tampa, FL, sister-in-law Maria Scalora of Wethersfield, sister-in-law Angela Scalora of New Britain and special cousins, Gennaro and Pina Vittorioso of New Jersey. Lydia is also predeceased by a sister and four brothers. Lydia’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful and supportive staff on the Wooster 3 Unit at Masonicare Health Center in Wallingford for their loving, kind and compassionate care given to Lydia during her time there.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, November 22, from 4-7 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. Everyone is asked to go directly to church for her Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, November 23, at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Parish (Corpus Christi) 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield.
