Marie Elizabeth DeFilippo of Rocky Hill passed away peacefully on August 30, 2024. Marie was born October 19, 1940, beloved daughter of the late Martin and Elizabeth (DeCorleto) DeFilippo and grew up in the South End of Hartford. She was a graduate of Bulkeley High School. After high school, Marie graduated from Hartford College for Women, St. Francis School of Medical Technology and later in life, Trinity College.
Marie started her Medical Technology career at St. Francis Hospital, but itchy feet found her off to Phoenix followed by a longer stay in Denver. About 43 years ago, Marie returned to Connecticut and settled in Rocky Hill. She took a job in the Hartford Hospital lab and remained there until her retirement.
Interests included art, theater and books. She had season tickets at Hartford Stage and Theater Works. Marie enjoyed her art classes and did some excellent water color paintings. She also looked forward to her Italian classes and book club. Travel was also exciting for Marie, with trips to Monhegan Island, Greece, and Italy where she studied Italian. A trip to Rocky Hill Ferry Park for lunch or a ride to the CT shoreline were among her favorite spots.
Marie was surrounded by a fantastic group of close friends and family. These people checked on her often to the very end. There were always many ways to meet new friends. If you were in the waiting room at the doctor’s office, you were fair game for conversation. Also to be mentioned are the various neighbors in her building, who always stopped to chat and help her with her shopping bundles.
One of Marie’s greatest joys was helping others with her gentle guidance and generous financial support. Marie would always make time in her day to listen carefully to those seeking her advice. A phone visit was always welcome. We are joyful that Marie has returned to the Lord and has been restored by His grace.
Marie leaves her brother and sister- in-law, Martin and Edythann DeFilippo of Wethersfield; nephew, Martin DeFilippo and his wife Paige and cherished grandnephew Maxwell, all of Stratford. She will be missed by her goddaughter, Cynthia Dimmock and a host of special of cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 20 at 11 a.m. at St. James Church of St. Josephine Bakhita Parish, 767 Elm Street, Rocky Hill. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield. Please try to help an individual or organization that is in need in Marie’s name. It will keep her spirit alive. To share a memory of Marie, please visit www.desopofuneralchapel.com
