

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear and beautiful mother, Mary (D’Avanzo) Maietta. Mary died May 4, 2012 in the comfort of her own home surrounded by her family. Mary was born February 4, 1910 to Elia and Antoinette D’Avanzo, she was the first daughter after four sons. Mary attended Saint Joseph’s School on South Main Street, New Britain when the classrooms were up over the church. After St. Joseph’s, Mary left school to help her mother. In 1929 Mary was the Queen of the Columbus Day Parade. On April 21, 1930 she married Andrew Maietta, who predeceased her on July 31, 1965. Mary enjoyed her winters in Florida and her summers at her home in Old Lyme. She loved the New York Yankees, but most of all she loved her family. Mary was a member of the New Britain Council of Catholic Women, Boys’ and Girls’ Club Auxiliary, Hospital for Special Care Auxiliary and a founding member of St. Joseph’s Rosary Guild. She is survived by her two devoted daughters, Maria M. Poole of New Britain, with whom she made her home and Grace and her husband Robert Bonola of Plainville; the sunshine of her life, her grandson David R. Bonola and his wife Dina and their two little sunshines, her great-grandsons, Christian and Julian, all of Southington. She also leaves her nieces, Anne and her husband William Hill of Texas and Florida, Paula and her husband David Rose of Maine and her nephew, Elia and his wife Marilyn D’Avanzo of Newington, as well as several other nieces, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, C. Frank, Louis, James, Anthony and John Paul D’Avanzo and sisters, Teresa Berardesca and Helen Kostruba; her niece, Ruth D’Avanzo McGarry and nephew, Marshall D’Avanzo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday (May 8) at 10 a.m. at St. Maurice Church, 100 Wightman Rd., New Britain. Everyone is asked to go directly to church. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Britain. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield.
