Beloved mother, grandmother, sister and dear friend to many, Mary (Camilleri) Mattioli, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 14, 2020 with her loved ones close to her heart. Mary, daughter of the late Concetto “Jack” and Giuseppina (Sequenzia) Camilleri, was born in Hartford, CT on May 23, 1931. She is pre-deceased by her loving husband Marino Mattioli, affectionately known as “Marty”. Mary was a longtime resident of the South End of Hartford. For over 50 years she and Marty created countless memories with family and friends on Cromwell Street, and then at Collier Farms in Wethersfield where they moved in 1998.
Mary began working as a young adult in Hartford, at the Connecticut Bank and Trust Co. and later as an elementary school paraprofessional at the Dr. James H. Naylor and Burr Schools where she shared her love of working with children. She went on to build a successful career working for many years at, and eventually retiring from, The Hartford Insurance Company. A woman ahead of her time, Mary balanced her work life along with being a homemaker and raising two daughters. During this time she also selflessly supported her widowed mother for nearly 20 years. Never foregoing her love for the sun and ocean, Mary enjoyed many summers at Point O’ Woods Beach. Later, she and Marty explored many new places together across the globe, in travels both near and far.
With continued zeal for life after retirement, Mary chose to volunteer at The Bushnell Performing Arts Center, and became an active member of the Women’s Club of The Church of the Incarnation as well as the Wethersfield Senior Center.
Mary was blessed with an abundance of long-lasting old and new friendships. Some were taken too soon, while others remained close to her throughout her long life. The “Knit-Wits”, her weekly card group, and many fun-filled lunches brought her great joy. The greatest joy however and what she valued most in her life, was time spent with family.
She will always be remembered for her strength, positivity and kindness, not to mention her keen sense of style and delicious Italian cooking. She leaves a legacy of devotion and love to family and friends that will live on in her children and grandchildren for generations to come.
Mary will lovingly be remembered by her two daughters and their spouses, Diane Edwards and her husband Dave of Wethersfield and Sharon Dalicandro and her husband Fred of Glastonbury, and her four grandchildren, Lindsay, David, Paige and Kate, all who will forever smile when they think of “Grandma”. She also leaves behind her beloved and only sibling, a brother, Salvatore “Ted” Camilleri and many other special family members and friends. The family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Hartford Hospital who cared for Mary with tremendous compassion.
Due to the pandemic all services for Mary, including a Mass of Christian Burial, will be private and are being handled by D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. The family will celebrate her life with a Memorial Mass to be announced at a future date, when family and friends can gather together safely. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to honor the life of Mary, may be made to Hartford Hospital online at: https://giving.hartfordhospital.org/donate.
