Vincenza “Nancy” (Davia) D’Appollonio, 92, of Wethersfield, passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, March 14, 2024, joining her loving husband Pasqualino in eternal rest. Vincenza was born in Lenola, Italy on June 16, 1931 to Antonio and Maria (Marocco) Davia. After getting married, she traveled by steamship to New York with her husband and young daughter and settled in Connecticut. She worked a variety of jobs, including as a seamstress, at Royal and Underwood Typewriter, and at Keeney Manufacturing Company, where she retired from in 1990 to provide daycare to her grandchildren. The children thrived under grandma’s loving care and she enjoyed every minute, often sharing stories and memories of her young grandchildren’s escapades. She loved her family above all else and was happiest when she was surrounded by them, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored and was so proud of. She enjoyed cooking and baking Italian specialties including pizza, pizzelles, struffoli, lentils, and pasta fagioli, and was especially known for her wonderful sponge cake and homemade egg noodles. She would make something special and call family members and friends to come by to enjoy it with her. She also enjoyed tending her vegetable garden and knitting. Family members and friends treasure their cozy blankets and scarves handmade by Grandma. She was a longtime communicant of Incarnation Church and a woman of prayer, who watched the television mass every day.
She leaves her loving daughter, Nancy Andrews and her husband Daniel of Wethersfield; son-in-law, Robert Glass of Berlin, as well as grandchildren, Andrew and Christine Glass of Newington, Adam Andrews of Miami, FL, Jennifer and James Jordan of Cromwell and Michael Zappulla of Southington. She was “Bisnonna” to her great grandson, Connor Glass. She also leaves her cousin Caterina Ricardi, who she spoke with every day; her caring neighbors, especially Margie and Alan Mancini, and many nieces, nephews, family and friends in the U.S., Australia and Italy. In addition to her husband, Vincenza was predeceased by two daughters, Patricia Glass and Maria Zappulla; a granddaughter, Christina Zappulla; her brother, Gaspare Davia and her sister, Giovanna Spirito.
Funeral services will begin Wednesday, March 20 at 9 a.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Incarnation of Christ the King Parish, 544 Prospect Street, Wethersfield. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
